One area that is impacting Napa wines is the increased improvement of imported wines. I can find wines that are as good as Napa for half the price. This is across a numerous varietals. Not that a group friends that have tasted wines blind for over 30 years are somms, wines that are guessed as napa cab turn out to be other. Some wine buyers by labels, but most individuals I know go for value.
I manage a wine shop in Ohio. Despite the "glut" of California wine, I have yet to have a single winery lower their prices. In fact, they are still raising them. DAOU cab just went from 24.99 to 28.99 up 16%. Sounds like they are waiting for this year's short harvest to fix things.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts. We hear others that have similar concerns. We also hear from some who suggest that the price will continue to rise at the high end.
Well yes. I try to avoid wines that are increasing in price. There are always alternatives. Sometimes I think the famous wineries have an attitude that people will continue to buy their wines no matter the price. And they can always reason that 'everything is going up in price."
According to NIQ, the price for all California wines rose from an average of 8.93 for the past 12 months ending 12/28/24 to 9.97 for the 4 weeks ending 12/28/24. All Cabernet Sauv went from 11.25 to 13.10. Looks to me like the wineries are trying to maintain sales levels by raising prices. I guess I get it, but somehow doesn't make sense.
