I only learned that Mexican Independence Day was September 16th when I unkowingly booked a trip to Cancun many years ago for that week. I was welcomed into one heck of a celebration! I'm not sure why I did not know that fact previously. Perhaps because most people in the US focus on Cinquo de Mayo.

The interweaving of cultures we all come from is so fascinating — and all too often forgotten or left behind as successive generations become Americanized. But it is what makes things so interesting! (Speaking as a mostly-Swedish-American who feels so fortunate to have grown up knowing about where so much of my family came from....)
