Sasha, so good. I always look forward to your essays. This one hit the mark once again. The parallels to 1984 are easy for everyone to see. NVF is a welcome antidote to what comes out of the Ministry of Truth (Minitrue) as Orwell called it. But more important than reminding us of Orwell's dark prescience is your calling us to embrace hope. I too have new grandchildren and am finding both the joy and hope you have found in yours. Keep writing and reminding. I remain convinced there are better days ahead, albeit not without travails.
I think you missed a very important fact: Saturday, the first night, coincided with the 49ers football playoff game. I think many people stayed home to watch that (as we did), because we went Sunday night and downtown was absolutely packed! All the low-riders came out and were parading their cars u and down the streets, and the sidewalks and exhibits were mobbed. I think that's wjy it seemed lighter to you.
Sasha writes, "We are witnessing something powerful in the courage of ordinary people rallying to protect their neighbors." Thank you, Sasha. We need to recognize that everyday people are standing up and speaking out, not just in Minneapolis but everywhere. That such sentiments are part of the community dialog in what I have always thought of as my quiet, reserved little hometown warms my heart to no end. One can only hope we are at a turning point, even if it may take a great deal to undo the damage to the American polity and psyche. The NVF is a small but important part of our collective recovery.

Sasha, I agree with Douglas L. Murray, this is "so good." Your profound writing should be required for us all. Thank you for sharing your story. Napa Valley is so lucky to have you. Hopefully, your words will inspire more people to see the tragic truth. We can't hide our eyes from the Hitler-like actions being directed from D.C.

Wonderful, Sasha! Simply wonderful!!! We all bow in admiration!!!
Great article Sasha! I too got stuck about on page 16 of 1984. It was too close for comfort. I will check out your recommendation for So Big. Thanks!
Is it just me or are the rest of the poll questions not working for subscribers?
The polls timed out unexpectedly. Hopefully that is a rare occurrence, but do let us know if it happens again. Thank you.
Thank you for this! I’ve never been, but will now make the effort to drive down from St. Helena to stroll and grab a bite to eat!
