AI or Real? Count the AI-Generated Pictures
The Vital Role of Local Content Creators in an AI-Driven World - By Tim Carl
So far at Napa Valley Features we’ve focused on sharing compelling local stories. And the initial feedback has been wonderful. The support and encouragement suggest we are on the right path.
Today, for a little bit of fun tinged with a splash of terror, we want to play a game. It’s called "Count the AI-Generated Pictures.”
Below you will find a series of 15 images. Your job is to count the number you think are AI-generated. Simple as that. The answer will be revealed at the end.

All of the composite images shown above were generated using AI technology. In fact, much of the text of the game you just read above was generated using AI.
It is predicted that in the near future a majority of the content we read and see will be created by complex computer algorithms that draw from the hard work of actual authors, artists, photographers and other humans. The work of these genuine content creators is being gathered, combined and recombined to produce material that appears real but is actually repurposed.
While AI can be likened to a calculator, it can never replace the necessity of on-the-ground reporting. We may be amazed by the remarkable progress AI has made, but it is important for us to continue supporting local journalists and other human-content creators who play a crucial role in distinguishing fact from fiction, which is becoming increasingly challenging.
Toni. In a way they did come from "my" eye because I wrote the prompts for each of them as I was doing this research. In away, we might someday think of these like the first painters viewed the camera. That said, for us at Napa Valley Features our focus is on capturing local content, and, at least for now, that is beyond AI's reach. All the more reason to build a robust and sustainable local-content creator community!
I thought seven photos were AI generated. A real test for readers would be to have another test, including real photos from the Napa Valley.
