Editor’s Note: We recently received this letter to the editor from Debbie Alter-Starr in Yountville and wanted to share it with our readers. It highlights a meaningful opportunity for the Napa Valley community to come together in support of Ukraine.
Dear Editor,
I am writing to raise awareness about the recent missile attack on the largest children’s hospital in Kyiv and how we in the Napa Valley can help save lives in Ukraine by supporting Hands on Global’s locally led fundraiser for tourniquets.
This attack caused several deaths, many injuries, destroyed the children’s hospital's dialysis unit, forced children with cancer out into the streets to receive treatment and caused debris to fall into young heart patients’ open chests during surgery. This is how the war affects Ukraine. There are frequent deadly strikes on hospitals and other civilian targets to terrorize the Ukrainian population in addition to many casualties at the frontlines.
We can help save the lives and limbs of Ukrainian adults and children by equipping frontline defenders and first responders in Ukraine with $15 tourniquets. This is an affordable and at the same time priceless gift to anyone whose bleeding is stopped. Buying tourniquets made in Ukraine by Sich.UA also ensures faster delivery to the frontlines and boosts Ukraine’s economy.
Please join my family and Ukrainian refugees in the Napa Valley in supporting HOG’s campaign. There are several ways to participate:
Join us for a Ukrainian cultural event, “3,000 Tourniquets for Ukraine: Garden Party and Fundraiser,” Saturday, July 20, 4-7 p.m. at a home in old town Napa. Admission includes live Ukrainian music by Andriy Shegera, Ukrainian food, a glass of wine and more. Additional Napa Valley wine and Ukrainian food by Napa’s own Natalia Dacha will be for sale. This delicious new food business by Ukrainian refugees takes online orders and can be found at our local farmers markets. Please come on July 20 to meet some of the 50 Ukrainian refugees living in Napa County and healthcare providers working in Ukraine and hear their stories. Each $30 ticket buys two tourniquets for Ukraine. Find tickets and event location at our website. Admission is free for children, teens and Ukrainian refugees.
Donate to Hands on Global’s "stop the bleed" campaign online at www.handsonglobal.org or send a check. Co-led by HOG board member and hands-on nursing volunteer, Napa resident Tama Adelman, R.N., HOG has already received $15,000 in donations. Our first 1,000 tourniquets will be delivered throughout Ukraine next week. Donations are tax-deductible.
More nonprofit and business sponsors would be greatly appreciated.
This fight for freedom rings in our bones. Our son, Aaron, lived in Ukraine, and my husband and I have Ukrainian-Jewish ancestry. Ukrainians, free since 1991, must not be enslaved again. Since 2022, we have fundraised for Ukrainians through a group we founded with Ukrainian college students, Napa Valley to Ukraine. We also have assisted refugees in coming to Napa County and forming a mutual support network.
For more information, please contact Tama Adelman at tamainnapa@gmail.com or 415-860-8884 or Debbie Alter-Starr at deb@napaukraine.org.
Thank you, Napa Valley, for standing with Ukraine since 2022.
Sincerely,
Debbie Alter-Starr
