Mentis presents its second annual Youth Mental Health Festival at Napa Valley College on Saturday, May 11, from 1 to 4 p.m. This free event, designed for teens ages 13 to 19, offers a range of activities such as bracelet-making, mosaic creation, yoga, rock-painting, and therapy dogs, aimed at teaching self-care and mental wellness. The Fire Safe Fair, a free public event focused on fire safety and preparedness, will be held at the Silverado Resort Mansion Garden Tent on Saturday, May 18, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Featured speakers include state Sen. Bill Dodd, CAL FIRE unit chief Mike Marcucci and Napa County fire administrator David Shew. Festival Napa Valley, known for its (mostly) classical music presentations, announced that tickets for its 2024 summer season, running from Saturday, July 6, through Sunday, July 21, are now on sale. The festival offers a blend of music, wine and cuisine set against the scenic backdrop of Napa Valley. (R) 43rd Napa Valley Writers’ Conference at Napa Valley College
The 43rd Napa Valley Writers’ Conference, a gathering of authors spanning antiquity to contemporary society, is set for July 21-26 at Napa Valley College. The conference features a translation program led by classicist Emily Wilson, acclaimed for her translations of “The Iliad” and “The Odyssey.” The event includes juried workshops in fiction and poetry with a deadline for applications on April 22. Free Comic Book Day on Saturday, May 4, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. This family-friendly event welcomes teens, school-aged children, and adults to celebrate a shared enthusiasm for comics and graphic novels. Guests are encouraged to arrive in costume and can collect a complimentary comic book, available at both Napa and American Canyon libraries, while supplies last.
The Youth Chess Club meets at the American Canyon Library in the Community Meeting Room on Wednesday, May 8, from 3 to 5 p.m. Open to teens and school-age children, the club provides a lively setting for players of all skill levels to enjoy chess. An instructor will also be available to teach the basics to newcomers, ensuring a fun and educational experience for all participants. This event is free to attend.

The annual "Meet Me in The Street" event series returns to W. American Canyon Road, between James Road and Elliot Drive, on the second Wednesday of June, July, and August 2024, from 5 to 8 p.m. This popular event series, attracting over 7,000 attendees, features a vibrant mix of activities including a Food Truck Rally, Business Tables, Live Music, Kid Activities, a Wine and Beer garden, a Classic Car Show, and a Corn Hole Tournament. (N) Opening Weekend: Humphrey Bogart film at The Moonshine Theater
The Moonshine Theater in Calistoga opens its doors for a special Humphrey Bogart film weekend, starting Thursday, May 2. The weekend kicks off with "Key Largo" on May 2, followed by "Maltese Falcon" on May 3, and concludes with "Sabrina" on May 5. Renowned pianist Janet Guggenheim stars in a free concert with the Napa Valley Chamber Orchestra, featuring Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 12. There will be two workstations where you will work with a Washed Ashore artist, who will guide you in crafting pieces made from marine debris. Experience the powerful and resonant art of Taiko drumming at the St. Helena Public Library, led by Kristy Oshiro, a 4th generation Japanese Okinawan-American and a professional taiko artist with 30 years of experience. Join the St. Helena Striders for their monthly community walk on Saturday, May 4, starting at 9 a.m. Participants will meet at the corner of Adams and Oak Streets in front of the Coffee Roastery. The best views of the Eta Aquarids are expected in the predawn hours of May 4, when the waning crescent moon will not rise until just before dawn, meaning particularly dark skies will allow stargazers to glimpse even the faintest shooting stars. However, the peak on the night of May 6 (after midnight) and the morning of May 7 offer up to 60 meteors per hour. While this shower favors the Southern Hemisphere, observers in Napa Valley can still catch a good show.
May 8: New moon
May's new moon on the 8th (8:23 p.m., May 7) provides another perfect opportunity for observers to explore the fainter objects in the night sky without the interference of moonlight.
May 9: Mercury at its greatest western elongation
Mercury appears again in the morning sky on May 9 (starts 4:04 p.m., May 8) at its greatest western elongation. Early risers can catch a glimpse of it low in the eastern sky just before sunrise.

The California Native Plant Society’s Napa Valley chapter is actively seeking volunteers for its spring and fall plant sales. Volunteers gain knowledge about native plant communities while assisting with the organization and execution of the sales, helping patrons select and purchase plants. No prior expertise in native plants is necessary. For those interested in gardening and native plant cultivation, the Martha Walker Native Habitat Garden offers a hands-on opportunity.
