(R) Federal Library Funding at Risk
Libraries are among the most trusted public institutions in the Napa Valley and beyond, providing opportunity, access and education across the country. Yet all 125,000 libraries in the United States are at risk: An executive order aims to eliminate the Institute of Museum and Library Services — the only source of federal funding for libraries and a major supporter of museums. On March 31, nearly all IMLS staff were placed on administrative leave. A letter from the IMLS board — a body created by federal law — warns that cutting core programs would violate congressional mandates, since most of IMLS' work is authorized and required by statute. Despite this, the agency’s future remains in limbo — and with it broadband access, summer reading programs, rural library support and digital resources for students. To learn more or to share your views, visit the American Library Association’s action page.
