(R) Federal Library Funding at Risk
Libraries are among the most trusted public institutions in the Napa Valley and beyond, providing opportunity, access and education across the county. Yet all 125,000 libraries in the United States are at risk: An executive order aims to eliminate the Institute of Museum and Library Services — the only source of federal funding for libraries and a major supporter of museums. On March 31, nearly all IMLS staff were placed on administrative leave. A letter from the IMLS board — a body created by federal law — warns that cutting core programs would violate congressional mandates, since most of IMLS' work is authorized and required by statute. Despite this, the agency’s future remains in limbo — and with it broadband access, summer reading programs, rural library support and digital resources for students. (N) Somos La Onda Campaign Supports Puertas Abiertas
La Onda, a two-day music and culture festival produced by BottleRock and held May 31 and June 1, will donate a portion of each ticket sold to Puertas Abiertas Community Resource Center as part of its Somos La Onda campaign honoring the Latino community. (R) Festival Napa Valley Announces ‘Choose Your Price’ Ticket Model for 2025 Summer Season
Festival Napa Valley introduces a “Choose Your Price” ticket option for its 2025 Summer Season, aiming to make performances accessible to everyone. Launched in March, this groundbreaking model allows attendees to choose ticket prices starting as low as $0-$5, with the option to contribute more to support the festival’s educational and community programs. Entries due by Friday, April 18, 5 p.m. Middle and high school students living in Napa County District 5 are invited to submit one artwork in painting, drawing, photography or mixed media for a chance to win scholarships and be featured in community exhibitions. Prizes include $500 for first place, $250 for second, $100 for third and a $50 people’s choice award. Entry is free and must include a digital image of the artwork submitted online. (R) Brannan Center Fundraising Campaign Nears Goal
Brannan Center, set to open this fall as Calistoga’s new community gathering space and performing-arts venue, has raised more than $11 million toward construction and initial operating costs, with $1.5 million left to go. Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks
Closest approach to Earth: April. Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks, a periodic comet with an orbital period of approximately 71 years, will make its closest approach to Earth this month. It is expected to reach naked-eye visibility under dark skies, displaying a bright coma and possibly a tail. Best viewing time: after sunset in the northern sky. Where to look: near the constellations Draco and Ursa Major (Big Dipper). Use binoculars or a telescope to enhance your view. This is a rare opportunity to observe this historic comet, which was first discovered in 1812.
Mercury at Greatest Western Elongation
April 21, before sunrise. Mercury becomes visible low on the eastern horizon just before dawn during its greatest elongation west of the sun.
Lyrid Meteor Shower Peak
April 22–23, after midnight. Produces about 20 meteors per hour at its peak with minimal interference from moonlight this year — an excellent opportunity to capture meteors radiating from Lyra.
Moon Near Venus and Saturn
April 25, evening hours. A celestial triangle featuring Venus, Saturn and a crescent moon creates a stunning grouping, perfect for wide-angle photography.
New Moon
April 27, all night. With no moonlight interference, this is an ideal time for observing deep-sky objects such as galaxies and nebulae under dark skies.
