Activist groups are transforming Independence Day into a platform for political dissent, with coordinated demonstrations and boycotts across California. Organizers include Indivisible, Women's March and The People's Union USA, who oppose recent Trump administration policies, ICE actions and corporate responses to protest movements.
July 4th Silent Protest — July 4 — A nationwide boycott encouraging people to avoid parades, flags, fireworks and large corporations in favor of small, local spending and private gatherings. Organized by The People's Union USA.
"Free America" Protests — July 4 — Hosted by Women's March, these include block parties with protest art, food and dancing. Events are planned in San Diego (community picnic), Burbank (march) and San Francisco (march and "anti-fascist dance party").
"No Kings 2.0" — July 4 — Indivisible-led rallies with speakers and protest signs across California, including in Napa, Berkeley, Cambria, Chula Vista, Claremont, Los Angeles, Mount Shasta, Santa Clarita, Tracy, Visalia and Yreka.

Friday, July 4, times vary. Parades, festivals and fireworks will take place countywide for Independence Day. In Napa, the parade starts at 9:30 a.m. with a festival at Oxbow Commons from 3 to 10 p.m. and a 9:30 p.m. drone show. St. Helena hosts a 10 a.m. bike ride, all-day festivities at Crane Park and fireworks after dark. Yountville’s family celebration runs from 4 to 7 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Park (no fireworks). Calistoga’s parade begins at 11 a.m., followed by an afternoon Star Spangled Social at Pioneer Park with a laser light show after dark. In American Canyon, a 3 p.m. parade is followed by a festival at Community Park II and fireworks at dusk.

Perseid Meteor Shower Peak
Aug. 11–12, after midnight. One of the most popular meteor showers, producing up to 100 meteors per hour at its peak. This year’s conditions are excellent, with minimal moonlight interference.
Venus and Jupiter Conjunction
Aug. 12, predawn hours. Venus and Jupiter will appear very close together in the eastern sky before sunrise. Venus will shine brightly, while Jupiter will have a golden hue. Through a telescope, Jupiter’s banded atmosphere and Galilean moons may be visible.
Moon Near Saturn
Aug. 12, evening hours. The waxing crescent moon will pass close to Saturn in the night sky. Use a telescope to capture Saturn’s rings alongside the illuminated crescent moon.
New Moon
Aug. 23, all night. A moonless night provides optimal conditions for observing faint deep-sky objects such as nebulae, galaxies and star clusters under dark skies.
Moon Near Mars
Aug. 26, evening hours. The waxing gibbous moon will pass close to Mars in the sky. This pairing is ideal for capturing both celestial bodies in one frame using a telephoto lens or telescope.
Milky Way Core Visibility
Throughout August, after sunset until early morning. The Milky Way’s core remains prominently visible throughout August, arching across the southern sky. This is one of the best months for wide-angle astrophotography of our galaxy’s center.
