"Survival came not from certainty but from courage." Yet another great article, Tim. As I have always known, the Napa Valley is full of remarkable characters, mostly unknown, whose stories can bring light to these darker times. To take a little license with Mr. Vukovich's words, "The journalist scene in the Valley is hot, man, really hot."
I have been reading all the books by Alan Furst which teach about this time and the countries involved. I have learned a lot. I will see if I can order from Thrift Books the forgotten five hundred. Thank you for this story about Larry V. I have heard about him all my life but never really knew his story
A terrific article. Thank you so much for researching this and publishing. Motivating. All history, none of which I knew, from folks sheltering our airmen to the history of jazz and in Calistoga. Great Sunday read. And bought a ticket and look forward to the event. So a second big Thank You!
Thank you, once again, for a wonderful piece about an amazing man. I wish I could attend the event, but even without being there, I know that Mr. Vukovich's music will bring joy to many. What a life he has led, and what a beautiful article you have written to share him with your readers. As always, your photos really bring the article to life! My gratitude to you, and Mr. Vukovich for taking me into a life well lived. Calistoga did have lots of jazz when I lived in the Valley. My mother enjoyed much of it. I loved reading this today!

Terrific portrait! I've read about Larry for years, yet never been to hear him play. Plan to see him on Oct 19!
