NAPA, Calif. — Peter Van Winden, a beacon of resilience and determination in the Napa Valley community, passed away at age 94 on July 31. As founder of Van Winden’s Garden Center, his legacy is deeply ingrained in Napa's horticultural landscape.
Born on July 17, 1929, in Pijnacker, The Netherlands, to parents Jacobus and Maria Van Winden, his early life was shaped by hardship and resilience. Tragic family losses before and during World War II coupled with the demands of farming under Nazi occupation forged an indomitable spirit in the young man. As the eldest son, he took up the role of providing for his family, navigating barges of produce through canals to the market. It was during these formative years that he began a journey of faith and fortitude that would define his life.
In search of opportunity and a fresh start, an 18-year-old Van Winden, alongside his father, immigrated to the United States after the war. They settled in California, working as gardeners at Beaulieu Vineyards. His grit, combined with his father's support, saw them successfully save and invest, eventually leading to the establishment of Van Winden’s Garden Center. This endeavor stands as a testament to their immigrant journey.
On a trip to southern California he met his future wife, Johanna. The couple married in 1959 and became the parents of six daughters over the course of the next decade. The family was active in their local Catholic community, notably at St. Apollinaris Church and School.
The Van Windens made a formidable team, both at home and in business. While Johanna managed the office and raised the children, Peter immersed himself in all aspects of the garden center.
His influence extended beyond his immediate family. For many in the Napa Valley community, Van Winden’s Garden Center was a place of learning and growth, where his infectious enthusiasm for horticulture and dedication to his work shone brightly. His impact was such that five of his six daughters followed in his footsteps, with four continuing to manage the nursery's legacy today.
Van Winden is survived by his wife, Johanna; his daughters, Marie Reis (Win), Anne Marden (Mark), Theresa Staggs (John), Catherine Giovannoni (Michael), Dorothy Campainha (Darren), and Petra Sullivan (Joe); 12 grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter. He is also remembered by his sisters, Jean Coyle and Tine (Jim) Lloyd, and numerous nieces and nephews. His cheerful spirit will be treasured by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Members of the community are invited to pay their respects during visitation hours on Monday, Aug. 7, from 5 to 6 p.m. at Saint Apollinaris Catholic Church, with the rosary to be prayed at 6 p.m.
A funeral mass will be celebrated in Van Winden's honor on Tuesday, Aug. 8, at 10:45 a.m. at St. Apollinaris Catholic Church, located at 3700 Lassen St., Napa, CA 94558.
In lieu of flowers, the family encourages memorial gifts to be made to St Apollinaris Parish. Donations can be made online via the parish's website or by calling (707) 257-2555.
Thank you for letting us know of this loss. When we first lived in the Valley, the Garden Center was the only place to buy good plants. I recall many great trips to pick up spring flowering plants etc. so many years of great adventures. My condolences go out to family and friends.
